What the team do

We regulate solicitors and law firms in England and Wales and have statutory power to close down a firm when it is in the public interest. This is known as an intervention.

Most law firms hold money on behalf of their clients. When we intervene into a firm, we take possession of any money the firm holds and its accounting records. We then investigate who that money belongs to so that we can return it to them.

We do this by inspecting the firm's accounting records. Unfortunately, these are often incomplete and unreliable, and in some cases may have been tainted by the misrepresentation or dishonesty of the intervened solicitor. Therefore, we also have to look for any other information that might help us establish who the money belongs to.

You can find out more about our interventions work on our website.

About the role of Senior Financial Investigator

As a Senior Financial Investigator you will be a senior part of the team that conducts financial and regulatory investigations to establish an accurate understanding of the money we are holding and who is entitled to it. You will have your own complex case holding as well as providing supervision, technical direction, development and support for more junior members of the team. You will oversee and manage work carried out by our panel solicitors - known as agents and be a principal point of contact for them on individual matters.

You will work within a statutory and regulatory framework and be driven by a strong commitment to public interest principles and a shared focus on the protection of clients.

You are likely to attend on site when we effect an intervention to identify and analyse relevant financial information, including speaking to staff and clients of the intervened firm. You will work alongside internal colleagues and our agents.

You will carry out extensive investigations into the firm's accounting records. You will draft written reports and decisions in accordance with our regulatory standards, making clear, evidence-based findings about who is entitled to the money and how it should be distributed.

You will be able to manage, motivate and support others, be confident in engaging with stakeholders at all levels and seek to inspire best practice.

The role will require short notice travel - approximately once per month and the occasional overnight stay.

What's in it for you

  • Showcase your analytical, problem solving and investigative skills

  • Supervise and monitor outsourced work
  • Develop strong professional relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Act as decision-maker for the distribution of money we hold

What we are looking for

  • Strong financial analysis and investigative experience - ability to critically examine and interpret financial statements and other evidence, which is often disordered or inaccurate
  • Proven financial experience (preferably with a law firm or in a forensic capacity)
  • Able to write accurate, well-reasoned reports and justify decisions
  • Able to challenge and influence internal and external stakeholders
  • Demonstrable experience of coaching and developing others
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team on a high and varied workload
  • Ability to work flexibly and adapt in a constantly changing environment.
