Advise law makers on how to develop and uphold environmental protection

Now that the UK has left the EU, the new Office for Environmental Protection (OEP) a new non-departmental public body, sponsored by Defra will be the cornerstone of environmental governance in England and Northern Ireland.

This is an unrivalled opportunity to join a new public body and shape it from the ground up, influencing how the OEP will operate in its crucial early years. As a key member of our Monitoring Environmental Law and Advice Team, you will be at the heart of operations, producing reports to present to Parliament and the Northern Ireland Assembly, as well as advising Ministers on proposed changes to environmental law and other matters concerning the natural environment.

Expect to lead and manage significant projects, some of which will be resourced internally and some of which will require you to commission external partners. Your day-to-day work will involve gathering information and evidence, commissioning and overseeing input from specialists, and developing and presenting recommendations to the OEP’s senior leaders and board. You will have line management responsibility for one direct report but will also lead and coordinate multidisciplinary teams drawn from across the OEP.

Combining leadership, planning and managerial skills with strong technical, research and analytical skills, you are likely to have a track-record of working in environmental law or policy at a national level. This will be matched by experience of leading or managing significant projects or programmes of work, including commissioning and procurement activities. You will also be practised at analysing evidence, drawing sound conclusions and presenting recommendations to a range of audiences. Line management experience is essential and you will be skilled in developing relationships with diverse stakeholders.

The natural environment is important for everyone, and we aim for our teams to reflect the diversity of our society. Your personal qualities will be as important as your professional experience and applications are welcomed from all backgrounds.

In return we offer a range of benefits including flexible working, generous annual leave, outstanding learning and development support including paid study leave, salary sacrifice schemes such as Cycle to Work and Charitable Giving, season ticket and rental deposit loans, and access to retail discounts and offers.
