Investigate and resolve breaches of environmental law

Now that the UK has left the EU, the new Office for Environmental Protection (OEP) a new non-departmental public body, sponsored by Defra will be the cornerstone of environmental governance in England and Northern Ireland.,

The OEP Complaints, Investigations and Enforcement team manages systems and processes to receive and validate complaints submitted by the public. It also manages cases identified by wider monitoring of compliance with environmental law. The team are creating the policies and procedures needed to enable the OEP to prioritise and investigate cases and, if necessary, take enforcement action. This is an unrivalled opportunity to join a new public body and help build its investigations function from the ground up, influencing how the OEP will operate in its crucial early years.

Our Investigations team has an important role in developing the OEP’s ability to oversee the implementation and enforcement of environmental law. Focused on cases identified by wider monitoring rather than direct complaints, you and your team will prioritise cases, conduct investigations and negotiate with public authorities to identify remedial actions.  Where solutions cannot be found, you may then escalate cases and undertake enforcement actions.

Although we are looking for analytical and tenacious people from a variety of backgrounds, you’re likely to have experience of working with environmental regulations or environmental law. Experience of managing casework or handling complaints would be an advantage. Well-organised and decisive, you’ll have the skills to negotiate agreements and solutions between different parties. You will also be capable of producing high-quality reports and communications.

The natural environment is important for everyone, and we aim for our teams to reflect the diversity of our society. Your personal qualities will be as important as your professional experience and applications are welcomed from all backgrounds.

In return we offer a range of benefits including flexible working, generous annual leave, outstanding learning and development support including paid study leave, salary sacrifice schemes such as Cycle to Work and Charitable Giving, season ticket and rental deposit loans, and access to retail discounts and offers.
